Cross-jurisdictional larval supply essential for eastern Australian spanner crabs (

چکیده

Context The spanner crab (Ranina ranina) stock of eastern Australia is distributed across two state jurisdictions and, as a non-migratory species with pelagic larval phase, connectivity within this likely to occur by dispersal, driven ocean currents. Aims To understand and patterns supply in the Australian stock. Methods Lagrangian particle tracking methods were used simulate transport around key fishing regions Australia. Key results Spawning off central Queensland (Qld) supplies large proportion recruits, supporting both Qld New South Wales (NSW) fisheries. Lagged settlement showed significant correlations catch-per-unit-effort total harvest taken NSW fishery, providing evidence suggest that fishery may be reliant on spawning activity Queensland. Conclusions fisheries are highly connected broad-scale identified current modelling approach could provide an indicator potentially good or bad recruitment years, particularly finer resolution, refined reproductive biology knowledge crabs becomes available. Implications source–sink structure it recommended co-management strategy adopted.

Predatory blue crabs induce stronger nonconsumptive effects in eastern oysters Crassostrea virginica than scavenging blue crabs

By influencing critical prey traits such as foraging or habitat selection, predators can affect entire ecosystems, but the nature of cues that trigger prey reactions to predators are not well understood. Predators may scavenge to supplement their energetic needs and scavenging frequency may vary among individuals within a species due to preferences and prey availability. Yet prey reactions to c...

Feeding selectivity of sesarmid crabs from northern Australian mangrove forests

Sesarmid crabs are possibly one of the most important components of mangrove fauna because of their influence on nutrient cycling and forest structure by feeding on litterfall. Little is known about the influence of electivity on the role of crabs in mangrove forests, and how this is affected by the availability of litter items. this study investigated electivity of three northern australian se...

Cross-Jurisdictional Activity Networks to Support Criminal Investigations

Border and transportation security is a critical part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) national strategy. DHS strategy calls for the creation of “smart borders” where information from local, state, federal, and international sources can be combined to support risk-based management tools for border-management agencies. Sharing cross-jurisdictional law enforcement data is important ...
